Abstract

Investigating the socio-cultural background, specifically the contradiction among the ideological influences in Indonesia in the late 1950s, cannot be done without discussing Salim. This painter promoted the aesthetic paradigm of ‘universalism’ that emphasized on the freedom of personal expression. Many facts show that Salim was a painter with a firm personality. He built an intensive social relation with Indonesian national movement figures. His paintings contributed significantly to the development of the art of painting in Indonesia. However, he was stick to his decision to stay in Europe. His major rationale was that Europe was his only chance to develop both as human being and a professional painter. In Europe, he intuitively expressed Indonesian values through visual idioms. Europe acknowledged him as a painter with Eastern spirit, whereas in Indonesia he was considered too western. As the matter of fact, he was a universalist. In the bargaining of the aesthetic paradigm the history of modern visual art in Indonesia, Salim existence has been an inspiration and psychological support for painters who fight for universal humanism in his works. His presence was a true manifestation of the national identity issue in art. It was a reflection of political live tradition that is always a color in the journey of Indonesia modern art and culture.   Keywords: modern paintings, nationalism, universalism, identity

Abstract

indonesia in netherlands colonization era experienced a western modern industrialization which was signified by liberal economic system application. This economic system led to the production of new regulation and mass communication media, including commercial advertisements. Advertisements which were actually persuasive messages of the offered product and service conveyed to the target audiences played a role in constructing a dynamic consumption culture and supporting the existing modern industries. One type of it was the enamel advertisement. It was made of a 2-3 millimeterthick iron plaque with an eye- catching visualization so that it attracted a lot of attention from the people.This kind of advertisement became a crucial part to translate the consumers’ taste which was built in the consumptive culture dynamics. Its verbal and visual signs revealed the employed social- economic system of the target audiences.            Keywords: artefact of modern industry

Abstract

Visual art in Indonesia is not stagnant at all. It is because art always respond to the complex world development from time to time. Graphical Art in Yogyakarta has been developing as well. It always contributes to the visual art promotion of Indonesia. This article will focus on exploring the movement of Graphical Art in Yogyakarta in the frame of Indonesia contemporary art discourse. Abstract

ATBM (non mechanical weaving equipment) is very popular in Indonesian weaving. There are various types of woven cloth in Indonesia, such as lurik, warp ikat, double ikat and songket. Indonesian weaving has been developing in many aspects. An innovation on weaving material is significant in the technical aspect of the production process. When ATBM is operated, usually the thread material is used.Nowadays, in addition to the thread material, the non thread ones are also applied.  This article will discuss about the non thread material application on the interior products.Keywords: ATBM, craft textile, non thread weft, weaving material, weaving

Abstract

Panakawan is a group character in a wayang ( Javanese traditional puppet show) show. Each panakawan is unique and capable of explaining various roles. The group can be met in various types of wayang in Indonesia. The panakawan special characteristic is that unlike other wayang characters, they have the by design ugly, invalid and unroportional appearances. Since when these characters existed in the Indonesian wayang is unknown. It is necessary to investigate the historical aspect of Panakawan. There are two tracks can be followed in scrutinizing the characters, namely the verbal aspect and the pictorial aspect. In verbal aspect, the data was obtained from notes, writings, literary works, etc in the form of publications or manuscripts. In pictorial aspect, the data is gathered from pictures, things, artifacts, etc.Keywords: panakawan, historical, archelogical

Abstract

environmental damages are acknowledged to be the negative impacts of the existence and activities of human. The impacts have been the major issues in the world such as the ozone hole, the earth temperature that is increasing significantly and the natural disasters. People need to change their paradigms and habits immediately to prevent further destruction on earth. Reutilizing used materials is one way, among other ways, to lessen the environment exploitation, even though it is not directly related to carbon dioxide reduction issue which is promoted by the KyotoProtocol supporters. However, in the realm of art and design, it is really relevant to creativity and at the same time, endorsing the sustainable design principles. Keywords: sustainable design, recycle, reused material
